Easy Horchata Protein Shake for Runners: High-Protein Post-Workout Fuel

As a runner, I’m sure you know by now that protein is key for recovery—but do you know why? After all, we’re not lifting weights (I mean, you also should be doing that, but that’s the story for another blog post!) 


Why Runners Need Protein

After a run (especially a long run or a hard run – hello speed workout days), your muscles are in repair mode. You’ve broken them down (in a good way!), and protein helps rebuild them stronger and more resilient. Getting enough protein post-run can help reduce soreness, speed up recovery, and keep you feeling strong for your next workout.


My favorite post run protein shake 

That’s where this Horchata Protein Shake comes in! It’s the perfect blend of protein, carbs, and nutrients to help you refuel deliciously. It also sneaks in two servings of veggies, which is always a win in my book. 


Inspired by the classic cinnamon-sweet flavor of horchata, this shake is creamy and is packed with plant-based protein.

🌟 Horchata Protein Shake Recipe 🌟

What You Need:


  • 1 cup Ripple milk (or any milk of choice – extra protein bonus!)

  • 1 scoop Orgain Horchata Protein Powder (21g protein + 0g sugar + 9g fiber)

  • 1 banana (for natural sweetness + quick-digesting carbs)

  • ½ cup frozen cauliflower rice (for extra creaminess and fiber)

  • ½ cup frozen spinach (for added nutrients – trust me, you won’t taste it!)

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (because horchata needs that spice! And cinnamon helps with inflammation)

  • 3-5 ice cubes (if you like it extra cold, my ice maker doesn’t work right now, so I don’t add this and it’s still great))


How to Make It:

  1. Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth.

  2. Pour into your favorite glass and sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on top.

  3. Enjoy the creamy, cinnamon-y goodness while your muscles soak up all that protein!

This shake is perfect post-run, post-lift, or as a quick breakfast that keeps you full and fueled.
